New Telegram members cannot see old messages: check the history gap safely

Diagnose missing Telegram group history for new and returning members. Check visibility, topics, deletion and saved copies without risky leave-and-rejoin experiments.

When a new member cannot see old Telegram messages, first compare a specific message from the affected period across accounts and devices. Establish whether it still exists in the original group, who can open it and when the affected person joined. A history setting, a missing topic and a deleted message require different responses.

Do not begin by making the group public, removing the member or recreating the chat. Those changes can expose conversations or disturb working access without explaining the original gap. The goal is to find the smallest useful check, then give the member the context they actually need.

If the job is to preserve available history for the team, use the history-export guide. A local archive does not restore deleted originals or change what a newcomer can see.

Turn “the history is missing” into a precise report

Ask the affected member for a date range and one concrete example: the announcement they expected to read, the file they were sent to find, or the discussion a pinned link should open. Avoid asking for their entire private chat archive.

Record:

  • The exact group and topic, if topics are enabled
  • Whether this is their first join or a return after leaving or removal
  • The join time and, for a returning member, the earlier departure time
  • The oldest message they can currently open and a known missing example
  • Their Telegram client and version, plus the result on another already signed-in official client if available

Choose a comparison member who is authorized to read the same material. An administrator seeing a message does not by itself prove that a normal newcomer should see it. Where possible, compare two ordinary members with different join dates.

A useful first distinction is missing from this account, missing only in this client, or not found by any checked member. The last result is still an observation, not proof of deletion.

Check the history setting without changing the audience

Telegram has a setting for hiding earlier history from new group members. Its history-visibility reference also documents limits: public chats cannot use it to hide prior history, and the operation is restricted for forums. A universal instruction to find the same switch in every group is misleading.

Have an authorized administrator inspect the current setting in the official app, where available. Record what is shown before changing anything. Ask whether old discussions were intended for future members: a private group's early planning, personal introductions or support details may have been shared with a smaller audience.

If the current setting conflicts with an agreed open-history policy, treat correcting it as a deliberate visibility change. Review the audience, use the control supported by that group and verify the result. Do not promise that one change will repair every earlier member's missing range, especially after departures or group conversions.

If the app does not offer the setting, record the group type and whether it has topics. Do not disable topics just to make a switch appear. Public visibility is a particularly poor troubleshooting shortcut: Telegram says public group history can be viewed by anyone. Telegram groups FAQ

Changing back afterward cannot guarantee that nobody read or copied material while it was exposed. Keep the existing audience boundary unless the group has deliberately decided to change it.

Treat first-time joins and returns separately

For a first-time member, compare messages from before and after their arrival. Check whether another newcomer who joined under the same known settings has the same boundary. Do not infer historical settings from what the switch says today.

For a returning member, divide the missing range into three parts:

  1. Messages from before their first membership
  2. Messages sent while they previously belonged to the group
  3. Messages sent while they were outside it

Then record what they can see after returning. “I used to read this” and “someone posted this while I was away” are different evidence. Include whether it is the same Telegram account; the same display name or phone number does not establish account continuity after deletion and re-registration.

Do not kick and re-add the person as an experiment. Do not ask a current member with working history access to leave so you can compare them. You would be changing the very membership history you need to understand, without a guaranteed repair.

If you need to reproduce a general behavior, use a separate test group with harmless sample messages and consenting participants. Label its result as a test of that setup; it does not establish what happened to an older production group.

A conversion boundary is useful evidence

Telegram's group migration documentation explains that clients combine history from the old basic group and the new supergroup. A gap around that transition is therefore worth recording, but it does not prove a particular client bug. Do not migrate or recreate the group again to test a theory.

A topic changes where you look

Forums organize discussion into distinct topics. Confirm that the link, search and media view refer to the intended one. Telegram documents the forum structure; seeing a different topic is not evidence that the missing messages were deleted. If someone deleted the topic itself, investigate that actual action instead of experimenting with the forum switch.

A client comparison should preserve the account

Use an existing signed-in device when possible. Check the active account, update an outdated official client, reopen the group and search with a short distinctive phrase or known date. First remove accidental sender, media or topic filters.

Record a difference between clients before trying more invasive fixes. Logging out, reinstalling, clearing chat history and clearing a media cache are different actions. None belongs at the start of a visibility investigation, and no one should need your login code to compare what they can see.

Separate deleted originals from surviving copies

An administrator removal, an author's deletion and an auto-delete timer can remove messages. Telegram's auto-delete explanation describes timers that erase applicable messages for participants. Check the timer and available evidence of a specific removal rather than assuming every old gap came from a bot. The group auto-delete guide explains which messages receive a timer and why older history can remain.

A message already deleted from the group for everyone cannot be restored there by switching history visibility or adding a moderation bot. A screenshot, forward in Saved Messages or downloaded attachment may preserve some content, but it does not establish that the original is still available in the group.

Telegram Desktop supports chat exports. An export is a separate copy, not a control for granting another member access to missing group history. Do not upload a private archive to an unknown “Telegram recovery” service.

If somebody already has a copy that the group is allowed to share, use the smallest relevant part. Check the audience and remove unnecessary personal details. Reposting an approved guide as a new message can help the newcomer; label it with the current context rather than presenting it as a recovered original conversation.

What Defendy can help you check

If Defendy logging was already configured, look for a relevant recorded filter or moderation action around the affected message. Check the actual destination and enabled category using the logging guide. A missing entry does not prove that no deletion happened, and enabling logging now does not recreate earlier records.

Defendy's log is not a complete Telegram message archive. Do not promise that the bot can restore deleted history, backfill everything from before it was added or reconstruct a complete list of past and present members from the remaining messages.

For the immediate onboarding problem, publish a current orientation message with the rules, essential reference material and a contact for missing context. If you use Defendy greetings, link to that maintained material through the greeting settings. Verify that the newcomer can actually open each destination. A link to an inaccessible old post only repeats the problem.

Send a useful support report if the gap remains

Keep the report factual and narrow:

  • Expected: which existing original message the member should be able to open
  • Observed: exact missing range, error or screen behavior
  • Membership: first join or return, relevant times and account continuity
  • Group state: private or public, topics, visible history setting if available, known conversion date
  • Comparison: which authorized account or already signed-in client can open the same original
  • Evidence: redacted screenshots and a message reference shared only with an appropriate support recipient

Do not publish private invite links or an unredacted group export in a public bug report. If the behavior can be reproduced safely with sample text in a test group, describe that separately.

Illustrative example: a returning member cannot open a September reference post, while an existing member can open its original and the returning member sees the same gap on two devices. That supports reporting an account-specific visibility gap. It does not yet prove that the bot deleted anything or that another rejoin will fix it.

Stop changing settings once you have a reproducible description. While the cause is investigated, give the person approved, current context they can read now. A useful onboarding path can be repaired even when the old history gap remains unresolved.
