Export Telegram group history and check what the archive contains

Save a Telegram group with Desktop, choose HTML or JSON, check dates and missing media, store the files safely and understand the limits of restoring an export.

To save a group conversation to your computer, open it in Telegram Desktop, open the three-dot menu and choose Export chat history. Select the dates, media, format and destination folder. When the export finishes, open the saved files and compare a few messages with the originals. A completion notice alone does not establish that everything you need was included. An export can be a useful reference after a project closes or a way to keep approved working materials. Decide what you need to preserve and who should be able to read it before starting. A group export contains other people's messages, even when you create it from your own account.

Understand which kind of archive you need

Several Telegram features can sound like the same thing:

  • Archived Chats organizes conversations inside the app. Moving a group there does not create a file on your computer. Telegram's chat archive
  • Cloud sync makes cloud conversations available across devices on the same account. It does not, by itself, give you a separate copy from a chosen date. Telegram FAQ
  • Export writes selected data to local files. Those files need their own checks and storage arrangements.

Treat the result as a copy of available material under the settings you selected. It is not a documented recovery image for recreating the account, membership and permissions of a group. Establish that distinction before deleting anything from the original chat.

1. Prepare Desktop and choose a useful scope

This guide uses the standalone Telegram Desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. Telegram Web in a browser and the mobile apps are different clients; look for the export controls described here in Desktop. On a Mac, check which Telegram app you have: Telegram's FAQ specifically confirms export support in Telegram Lite, its cross-platform client for macOS. The two Mac apps explained

First, verify the account and group in Desktop. Open some older messages you intend to preserve. If that account cannot already access them, investigate the history gap before running a large export. Changing the group's public visibility or asking members to leave and rejoin is a poor way to prepare a copy.

Use the group's own menu when you need one conversation. For a deliberate account-level export, the route is Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram Data, where you can choose categories of account data. Labels may differ slightly by version and language. Telegram's export instructions

Write down:

  • The group and, if relevant, the single forum topic you need
  • The first and last dates to include
  • Required media types, such as documents and photos rather than every video
  • The destination folder and available disk space
  • Who needs access to the copy and when it can be removed

For example, a completed project might require September's discussion and its PDF attachments. Exporting every personal conversation and contact on the account adds unnecessary data. Equally, a text-and-documents selection will not meet the goal if important decisions were discussed in voice messages.

2. Check the format, dates and media settings

Work through the export window in this order:

  1. Scope. Check whether you are exporting the group or a single topic. If an own-messages-only option is shown, it will not preserve the whole discussion.
  2. Dates. Set and record the intended boundaries. Include messages near midnight at either end in your later checks.
  3. Media. Select the attachment categories you need and check the per-file size limit. Selecting a category does not ensure that a large file will be downloaded.
  4. Format. Use HTML for reading or JSON for structured processing.
  5. Destination. Give this export its own folder. Keep it separate from an earlier attempt until you have checked both.

These date, media, size and format controls are reflected in Telegram Desktop's official interface strings. The options shown depend on the export route; inspect the actual window rather than assuming every route has identical controls.

Choose a format for its intended use

JSONLocal processing, searching and comparing structured records

The file parses, the expected dates are present and media is available

Both, where offeredKeeping a readable copy alongside data for later processingBoth representations cover the same intended selection

Telegram documents HTML and JSON export formats. Desktop also has a combined-format option. If your version does not offer it, you can export each format separately. Record when you ran each attempt because the conversation could change between them.

Choosing JSON does not automatically make the archive more complete. A perfectly readable data file may contain only one month or only your own messages. Format validity and coverage are separate checks.

3. Allow time for security checks and completion

Once you have checked the settings, click Export.

A recent Desktop login can trigger a security delay. Telegram's official help gives 24 hours or approval from another device as possible paths. The current export-session API also documents a security wait. Follow the timing and actions shown for your own account. Telegram's export help

If the app tells you to return later on the same device, record that time. Repeated sign-ins or handing a login code to an outside service are not sensible ways to speed it up. Do not schedule work on the assumption that a newly signed-in computer can export immediately.

Keep the computer powered and connected while it runs. Do not quit Telegram before the export finishes; Desktop's export progress notice explicitly warns about this. For a large job, plan a period when the computer can remain awake.

When the app reports completion, use its data-viewing button or open the destination folder. If the process stops early, label that attempt as unverified. Check the cause and settings before trying again. A folder containing some downloaded files is not evidence that the requested history is complete.

4. Check the saved copy before relying on it

Choose reference messages in the original group first. You do not have to reread the entire conversation for an initial check, but your sample should cover different parts of the date range and the file types you care about.

  1. Check both ends. Find an expected message near the beginning and another near the end. Compare the date, author and content. Record the computer's time zone and account for it when comparing timestamps.
  2. Check the middle. Pick several discussions between those boundaries. Finding the first and last records does not rule out a gap between them.
  3. Check topics. For a whole-forum copy, find a known message from each important topic. Label a single-topic export accordingly.
  4. Open attachments. Try actual files from each selected category, including a large one. A caption, link or thumbnail alone does not confirm that the required file is present.
  5. Test local access. Open the HTML and selected attachments while offline. This helps distinguish saved files from links that still need Telegram or another website.

For a long HTML history, check the links between pages. Browser search normally searches the page currently open; failing to find a phrase there does not establish that it is absent from the entire export. Preserve the folder structure when copying the archive so relative links to media and neighboring pages keep working.

For JSON, start with a local tool that can read the format. Successful parsing establishes that the file is structurally readable, not that all expected messages were exported. If you count records, decide what you are counting: ordinary messages, service events or one particular topic. The number of downloaded files is a different measure from the number of messages.

A sample can uncover obvious problems; it cannot prove absolute completeness. If a specific task requires every message in an agreed range, check that range comprehensively and record exceptions. Do not delete the originals on the strength of a few successful spot checks.

When something is missing

The text is there, but an attachment is not. Compare its type and size with your settings. Telegram's Takeout documentation explicitly accounts for oversized files being skipped and files becoming unavailable. Record the missing attachment and choose suitable settings for a retry. Raising the size limit cannot recover a file that is no longer available.

The export starts later than expected. Check the start date, export scope and access to a specific older message on the same account. For a group that was converted into a supergroup, sample messages on both sides of that transition: Telegram clients combine the old and new group histories. A gap near the transition helps describe the problem, but does not identify its cause by itself.

Other people's messages or a whole topic are absent. Recheck the scope. Takeout distinguishes own messages, general history and topic messages. Use known examples to check coverage rather than relying on the archive's total size.

Saving is restricted in the chat. Respect the group's content-protection setting. Telegram supports restrictions on forwarding and saving media. Ask the owner for an approved way to obtain the material you need. Do not disable protection or look for a workaround solely to complete an export.

Can you restore a deleted group from the export?

Do not delete or move a group on the assumption that uploading its HTML or JSON will restore the original conversation. In a Telegram support card opened in March 2023, a support representative said importing Telegram's own exports was unsupported. That is a dated answer, and the card allows for future changes.

When checked on October 7, 2026, Telegram's official import documentation still describes bringing history from other chat apps. The sources checked do not establish a supported route for rebuilding a group from its own HTML/JSON export. Support for a foreign-app import should not be read as a promise to restore original messages, group membership or permissions.

An existing export may let you read material that disappeared from the chat afterward. A new export should not be treated as a way to bring deleted originals back. For messages on a timer, take the group's auto-delete rules into account. Secret Chats are a separate case: they are tied to their originating devices and are not cloud history available to another client. Telegram's Secret Chat FAQ

If the goal is to change the group's owner, use the relevant ownership-transfer process. A conversation file does not grant those rights.

Store the files with a record of their limits

Keep a short note alongside the export: group, export date, requested period, format, media categories, per-file limit and verification results. For example: “September project; September 1–30; HTML and JSON; photos and documents; boundaries checked; one video deliberately excluded.” That makes the folder understandable months later.

  • Preserve the whole export folder and use a separate working copy for analysis.
  • For important material, keep a second copy in an approved, protected location and check that it opens.
  • Restrict access to the device and storage. Telegram's app lock does not replace protection for files already saved outside it.
  • Avoid uploading the entire archive to an online converter, bot or public support report just to inspect one missing message.
  • When sharing is necessary, prepare only the approved excerpt, verify the recipients and remove unrelated personal details.

Defendy's moderation log sends selected event categories to a configured destination. It can help explain moderation actions, but it does not replace a verified conversation export or promise recovery of deleted messages.

The useful endpoint is a copy whose date range you understand, whose required files you have opened, and whose exceptions and storage location are recorded. A folder called “full backup” is much less useful if nobody has checked what is inside it.
