A Telegram spam raid: contain the damage and reopen the group safely
An incident playbook for unwanted joins and mass spam: choose temporary controls, coordinate moderators, correct mistakes and restore access without relying on a planned anti-raid feature.
Unfamiliar accounts arrive, repeated promotions fill the conversation and several moderators start changing settings at once. The posts eventually stop, but nobody knows which invitation was revoked or why ordinary members can no longer speak. A raid can leave behind a second incident created by the response itself.
Start by identifying what is increasing: joins, messages or reports about particular members. Put one person in charge of temporary settings, use controls that address the observed problem and record how to return to normal. Containment and recovery belong in the same plan.
Defendy’s Anti-raid entry is currently marked Soon. An automatic switch to a stronger CAPTCHA during a surge is not established as an available feature. The playbook below uses ordinary CAPTCHA, verified message rules, Telegram’s own controls and human moderation.
Identify the surface before changing the policy
A successful announcement can cause a legitimate surge in membership. Unwanted repeated posts are stronger evidence of abuse than unfamiliar names alone. You can remove clearly harmful content promptly while leaving the larger admission decision open to review.
| What you observe | Inspect first | What remains outside that control |
|---|---|---|
| A surge of new joins | Active invitations, approval routes and the real CAPTCHA journey | Messages from accounts already admitted |
| One member posting rapidly | The member’s posts, individual restrictions and Telegram slow mode | Many accounts each sending one message |
| Many accounts sharing one promotion | The destination, distinctive wording and relevant message rules | Every future variation of the campaign |
| Spam under a channel post | The linked discussion group and its permissions | The incident through channel posting settings alone |
Keep only the evidence needed for a useful review: approximate time, an accessible message reference, a redacted screenshot and the repeated characteristic. Do not circulate harmful destinations to the whole community or open unfamiliar files as part of routine triage. Evidence collection should not delay removing an obvious threat.
Give the response three owners
One person owns admission and temporary configuration. Another handles violating messages and individual accounts. A third answers legitimate members if the team is large enough. In a small group, the same person can perform these jobs sequentially; the important part is knowing which decision they are making.
Record each setting’s previous value, temporary value, reason, time and rollback owner. A private moderator note is sufficient. This is a recommended human procedure, not an advertised Defendy emergency dashboard or a promise that every configuration change is automatically logged.
Post a short member update saying what is temporarily restricted, where help is available and when the team will review the situation. Avoid announcing a reopening time you cannot support. People who have not been admitted also need an accessible contact; a help link visible only inside the closed group cannot serve them.
Contain unwanted entry without losing track of applicants
Identify the invitations involved. If a specific link is being abused, consider revoking it in Telegram and replacing it where legitimate visitors need it. Revoking one link does not close other invitations or a public entry route. Test what remains reachable.
To use approval-based entry temporarily, configure the corresponding route in Telegram and verify it with an ordinary account. In Defendy, select the group, then Captcha → Captcha mode → Join requests only when it matches that route. Changing the bot mode does not turn old direct links into applications. Direct joins in the wrong configuration may receive no challenge.
If direct entry remains open, inspect In group mode, the bot’s rights and the actual posting restriction before a newcomer answers. A challenge message alone does not prove that the restriction was applied. Coordinate manual admissions, too: entering through an approved request does not trigger a second in-group challenge.
Be deliberate about failure actions. For join requests, Defendy declines a failed application; selecting ban additionally attempts to block the account. Neither CAPTCHA mode applies the chosen ban duration. An in-group mute does use its configured duration, but ban must not be treated as a brief delay. Select a less severe policy if that is what you intend, and test the actual outcome and recovery. The CAPTCHA guide explains this boundary.
Assign someone to pending applications. A temporary queue with no reviewer can become a permanent barrier after the visible spam disappears. If a moderator goes off shift, hand over the remaining applicants and active settings rather than just saying the group is quiet.
Contain messages that have already reached the group
Remove clear violations and restrict confirmed offenders under the community’s policy. Entry checks cannot retrospectively screen every account already present.
For repeated promotions, inspect Anti-spam and Stopwords in the group’s Mini App settings. Choose a rule tied to what you observed, such as a particular destination or distinctive phrase. Test it against a safe version of the violation and a useful message with similar wording. Broad fragments can suppress ordinary support questions and conversation.
Review consequences separately. Deletion, warning points, mute and ban are different effects. A warning may push an existing counter over its threshold, while selecting no user punishment does not necessarily disable deletion. If the abuse follows a completed CAPTCHA, use the post-verification spam diagnosis rather than making the entry challenge harder by reflex.
Telegram’s slow mode limits the posting frequency of an individual user. It can make a conversation more manageable, but many accounts can still each send a message. Configure it in Telegram where available; the platform documentation is not evidence that Defendy automatically controls it.
If harmful content still exceeds the team’s ability to respond, temporary group-wide content restrictions or a posting pause may be necessary. Those measures also affect legitimate members. Record the original permissions first, keep a separate moderator communication route and verify the result with an ordinary account. Assign a review point before leaving the group closed.
Telegram also offers native anti-spam in eligible groups, with false-positive reporting through the administrator log. Availability depends on the platform’s conditions. Treat it as Telegram’s separate system, not a Defendy switch guaranteed to exist for every group.
A hypothetical incident at a community launch
Imagine a public design community announcing a free workshop. Many people join to ask about attendance, while a smaller set of accounts posts the same unrelated promotion.
The admission owner checks the published invitation and confirms that it follows the intended CAPTCHA route. Another moderator removes the promotions and tests a rule for their destination. A third answers workshop questions. The team does not classify the entire influx as hostile because it is large.
The unwanted posts then outpace review. The team briefly pauses ordinary posting, records the previous permissions and names the person responsible for the next review. After cleanup, it restores normal text first and then the attachments the workshop needs, testing a useful question and a safe violation example at each step.
This is an illustrative sequence, not a customer case study or a universal reopening schedule. Another community may need a different permission set. What transfers is the discipline of recording changes, testing their effect and keeping recovery owned.
Reopen against explicit conditions
Silence while posting is disabled is not evidence that the attack has ended. It shows that messages cannot get through. Before relaxing restrictions, verify the admission route, moderator coverage and the rule intended to address the observed abuse.
- Compare the current configuration with the original values in the incident note.
- Remove one temporary measure rather than all protections at once.
- Test a new ordinary member’s entry and a useful message.
- Confirm that the safe example of the known violation gets the expected response.
- Review pending applications and complaints about mistaken restrictions.
- Tell members what has reopened and what still applies.
Disabling a strict filter does not remove warnings, mutes or bans it already issued. Review those separately and use the appropriate recovery action. Restoring posting rights also does not restore deleted messages; do not promise automatic recovery of the conversation.
Use available records from logging categories that were enabled before the incident. Missing records may reflect collection gaps rather than an absence of events. Review what the team actually knows, what remains uncertain and which single process or rule needs improvement.
Prepare the next handover while the details are fresh
Keep a short incident note with the entry route involved, the observed message pattern, temporary changes still active, applicants or appeals awaiting a decision, and the named owner of the next review. Omit unnecessary personal data and do not publish a speculative list of “suspicious” members.
A good outcome is a usable group with a clear response procedure. Permanently leaving every emergency restriction enabled can hide the original problem while quietly driving away legitimate participants.

Checked on October 5, 2026. Defendy’s attack protection guide explains the current limitation: Anti-raid is marked Soon, and automatic escalation to a stronger CAPTCHA is not available as a working setting. Telegram’s slow-mode reference and native anti-spam documentation support the platform distinctions. No live raid or load test was performed for this article.
